Role Description

The Principal Clinical Content - Physician (Clinical Content Architect, Advanced Clinical Decision Support) is a physician responsible for transforming clinical content created by UpToDate Deputy Editors into structured, high-fidelity decision trees used for workflow-integrated clinical decision support (CDS). This role serves as a bridge between clinical expertise, technical structure, and informatics needs.

  • Translate draft CDS content from Deputy Editors into complete decision trees using the proprietary no-code authoring platform.
  • Program associated logic, clinical text, branching conditions, action steps, and order sets.
  • Ensure that decision trees are internally coherent, clinically safe, and aligned with intended workflows.
  • Apply clinical knowledge during programming to identify errors, inconsistencies, or logic gaps.
  • Flag content or reasoning issues to Deputy Editors and collaborate on resolving them.
  • Verify that structured content accurately reflects the source clinical evidence and editorial intent.
  • Report issues, bugs, or usability challenges with the proprietary authoring software.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams by reproducing issues, reviewing fixes, and validating improvements.
  • Provide structured feedback to help guide tool enhancements.
  • Participate in efforts to streamline editorial workflows, improve content production, and support scalability.
  • Engage in projects exploring automation, including the use of AI tooling under editorial supervision.
  • Suggest improvements to templates, authoring workflows, and quality assurance approaches.
  • Create new CDS content under the direction of a Deputy Editor, when time allows.
  • Assist in updates or maintenance for CDS content across products, including UpToDate Pathways.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) with clinical experience.
  • Strong ability to think logically and model clinical decisions in structured formats.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to patient-safety-focused content.
  • Comfort working with proprietary software tools and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Ability to identify clinical or logical errors and communicate them clearly.
  • Collaborative mindset and strong communication skills.

Requirements

  • Experience with clinical informatics.
  • Experience with clinical decision support, clinical pathways, or structured algorithm development.
  • Familiarity with clinical informatics or medical terminology standards (e.g., SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD).
  • Experience troubleshooting or working with product/engineering teams.
  • Exposure to medical editing or structured content development.

Key Attributes for Success

  • Methodical and meticulous with strong pattern recognition.
  • Clinically astute with the ability to evaluate logic and workflow.
  • Comfortable in a highly collaborative, iterative environment.
  • Curious, adaptable, and interested in process improvement and automation.
  • Enjoys hands-on, detail-oriented work that directly supports clinical content integrity.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving, evolving content environment.

Travel

  • Minimal - You may be asked to attend business meetings from time to time.
