Job Description
Role Description
The IoT Network Architect at Hyper Solutions will design, build, and oversee the implementation of secure, scalable, and high-performance network infrastructures supporting Hyper’s Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. This role bridges the gap between physical devices, edge computing systems, and cloud platforms by defining network architecture, selecting appropriate connectivity protocols, and establishing security standards that protect data and device communications.
This individual will help ensure reliable connectivity across industrial, enterprise, and consumer environments while supporting large-scale deployments. The IoT Network Architect will also help develop Hyper’s recommended network architecture solutions and work directly with customers to tailor and modify those solutions to meet their operational and security requirements.
Core Responsibilities
- Design end-to-end IoT network architectures that enable secure and reliable connectivity between IoT devices, gateways, edge systems, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
- Define and implement connectivity strategies by selecting appropriate communication protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, LoRaWAN, 5G, Zigbee, or Thread based on power, range, and bandwidth requirements.
- Design and implement network security architectures including segmentation, device authentication using X.509 certificates, encryption standards such as TLS 1.2+, and secure device onboarding.
- Integrate edge computing resources to support real-time data processing closer to the source, reducing latency and bandwidth consumption.
- Monitor and analyze network traffic to optimize performance, reduce latency, and resolve connectivity bottlenecks.
- Plan and design network infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale IoT deployments with thousands to millions of connected devices.
- Provide technical leadership across cross-functional engineering teams, acting as a subject matter expert in IoT networking technologies and architecture.
- Work directly with customers to design network and connectivity architectures that align with their operational requirements and security standards.
- Lead cybersecurity discussions related to network architecture and ensure implemented solutions align with the agreed design.
Additional Responsibilities
- Develop architectural documentation including network diagrams, infrastructure blueprints, and system documentation.
- Ensure network architectures comply with relevant industry standards such as ISO/IEC 30141 and applicable regulatory requirements including GDPR where applicable.
- Support engineering and product teams in evaluating new IoT networking technologies and emerging industry trends.
- Assist internal teams and clients with troubleshooting, optimization, and architectural improvements for deployed IoT environments.
- Collaborate with internal product, engineering, and customer teams to refine Hyper’s recommended IoT network architecture solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in network architecture, including at least 3 years focused on IoT or Machine-to-Machine (M2M) environments.
- Deep understanding of networking protocols including TCP/IP and IPv6.
- Strong knowledge of wireless technologies such as Cellular/5G, LPWAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, and other IoT connectivity technologies.
- Experience working with IoT platforms such as AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, or Google Cloud IoT.
- Expertise in network security including firewalls, VPNs, PKI, TPM, and device-level security architectures.
- Proficiency with scripting or programming languages such as Python, Java, or C/C++ for automation, troubleshooting, and diagnostics.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with edge computing frameworks such as Azure IoT Edge or AWS IoT Greengrass.
- Familiarity with industrial IoT protocols such as OPC UA or Modbus.
- Knowledge of electrical distribution architectures or industrial infrastructure systems.
- Relevant certifications such as Cisco CCIE/CCNP, Certified IoT Architect (Arcitura), or cloud architecture certifications from AWS or Azure.
- Ability to work extended hours when workload requires and flexibility to collaborate across multiple time zones.
Location
Remote or Onsite in Richmond, VA, depending on candidate location and business needs.
Compensation
The anticipated minimum hiring range for this role is $120,000 -$140,000 per year. Actual salary varies due to factors that may include but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, and location. This hire will be eligible for a discretionary bonus or incentive compensation. Variable compensation may depend on various factors, such as individual and organizational performance.
