Role Description

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Browser Automation & RPA to join KayN team.

This is a founding-level engineering position on a small team. You will own entire systems, from design to production. We need a senior engineer with deep browser automation and RPA experience who works well in ambiguity and can independently drive new portal integrations from scratch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain browser automation agents that interact with third-party insurance portals — each agent handles authentication, patient search, and structured data extraction for a specific portal.
  • Run the agent development lifecycle: capture pageKnowledge artifacts (schemas, XPath selectors, screenshots) using AI-powered ingestion pipelines, iterate through selector enhancement loops, and manage S3 cache deployment.
  • Build portal-to-canonical data translators that map portal-specific eligibility data to a structured canonical format — including string parsers, procedure code classifiers, and coverage lookup logic across medical and dental benefit categories.
  • Write data extraction pipelines using XPath selectors, DOM traversal, and PDF parsing for portals that serve benefits as downloadable documents.
  • Design and maintain a multi-layer caching architecture (session, action, branch detection, MFA, pageKnowledge) that keeps production agents running without LLM calls at runtime.
  • Build AI-powered tooling and pipelines that generate and maintain automations (schema generation, selector creation, iterative enhancement).
  • Debug production automation failures — including cache misses (LlmDisabledError), session expiry, selector drift, and portal UI changes — across 20+ insurance portals.
  • Make technical decisions on system design, tooling, and implementation independently.
  • Shape the platform architecture alongside the rest of the engineering team.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Extensive Playwright experience including CDP, browser contexts, cookie/session management, network interception, and headless SPA behavior.
  • Background in test engineering, QA automation, or SDET roles — experience building automation infrastructure at scale.
  • Strong TypeScript skills (Node.js and browser environments).
  • Deep XPath expertise: anchor-then-navigate patterns, attribute-anchored locators, text-based and positional fallbacks, and XPath debugging against live SPAs. The system is XPath-first; CSS selectors are not used in extraction.
  • Solid understanding of browser internals: DOM, accessibility trees, CDP protocol, and how modern frameworks affect headless automation.
  • Experience using AI/LLM APIs to build production features (structured output, prompt engineering, tool use). We use LLMs heavily for schema generation, selector creation, and branch detection — but production agents run in cache-only mode (llmEnabled=false). Comfort with the workflow of building and validating caches locally, then promoting to S3 for production use.
  • Good architectural and system design skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Production RPA or web scraping experience.
  • Healthcare insurance domain knowledge: procedure codes (CPT, CDT, ICD), coverage tiers, deductibles, prior authorization rules, benefit period logic, and frequency limitations. This domain expertise directly informs how portal data is classified and translated.
  • PDF parsing experience — some portals deliver benefit breakdowns as downloadable PDFs rather than HTML; extraction requires table parsing in addition to DOM traversal.
  • AWS (ECS, S3, Lambda).
  • Monorepo development (pnpm workspaces, Turborepo).
  • Next.js / React experience.

Benefits

  • 20 fully paid business days of vacation.
  • 15 fully paid sick leaves.
  • 11+ fully paid public holidays.
  • Compensation for health insurance and sport club membership.
  • Ability to work from home or remotely.
